Trump Rips Special Counsel Appointment: 'This Is The Single Greatest Witch Hunt Of A Politician in American History'

Last night, Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein announced that former FBI Director Robert Mueller had been appointed special counsel to the investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign. Mr. Mueller will be given a wide mandate to look into such allegations. Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort are said to be key figures that Mueller will look into concerning this inquiry. As Katie reported, President Trump said that this investigation would only confirm that there was no Russian collusion.

"As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know – there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity,” said the president. “I look forward to this matter concluding quickly. In the meantime, I will never stop fighting for the people and the issues that matter most to the future of our country.”

At the same time, Leah noted how President Trump took to Twitter, saying “This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history.”

“With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special councel [sic] appointed!” he said in another tweet.

Well, let’s start with the last tweet. There was no special counsel because the FBI was already conducting a criminal investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails usage and whether she mishandled classified information. It’s not like nothing was happening on that front. Moreover, the special counsel appointment is more due to President Trump’s apparent recklessness by asking the attorney general and vice president to leave to purportedly apply soft pressure on the then-FBI director to drop the investigation into Michael Flynn also led us to this point in the whole Russia-Trump drama. Now, whether this was obstruction of justice remains to be seen. Fox News confirmed the existence of the memo in which Mr. Comey detailed the ways that the president was improper regarding influencing an ongoing investigation—and the Senate Intelligence Committee and the House Oversight Committee have asked for documents relating to this matter. Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) has asked the FBI to turn over all documents relating to communications between Mr. Comey and the president. We’re going to find out eventually what occurred. We’ll see what happens, but the president opened himself up to such accusations of obstruction. It wasn’t necessary. It was a total unforced error. Even if this turns out to be a nothing burger, Trump poured fuel on the fire of the Trump-Russia hysteria that has gripped the news media and the Democratic Party. Another aspect is the Flynn hire. This man has turned out to be a disaster for the Trump White House, another magnet for the Russia-Trump link allegations, and a person who probably should have never been hired in the first place. Flynn didn’t sign the ethics pledge, he received income from three Russian companies that he didn’t disclose, he lobbied on behalf of Turkey during the 2016 election, and told members of the Trump transition team that he was under federal investigation prior to the inauguration. He had already been selected to be national security adviser. On top of all that, his brief 24-day tenure ended with him not being truthful with Vice President Pence about discussions he had with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

As for the witch-hunt, yes—there is one that is waged by the news media. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) has made herself the unofficial spokesperson of the Democratic Party’s impeach Trump bandwagon, but we don’t know why that wing that makes a mockery of itself on a daily basis. The news media also goes apoplectic over anything that the man does. They’re still angry that he won the 2016 election. They’re beside themselves that Clinton is now a two-time loser who will go down as the woman who just couldn’t take a hint that her party wants her to go away. In that sense, a witch-hunt exists—but the special counsel appointment isn’t necessarily a confirmation of guilt—though Democrats would love to make it as such.

Okay, that's a good one, congressman.
