Social Justice Warrior Alert: Plessy Meets Ferguson At California State University Los Angeles

I guess for the typical social justice warrior, college campuses have become war zones. They're fraught with danger. There are microaggressions and instances of racism everywhere. It’s so bad that students must be separated along racial lines, especially when it comes to housing. That’s exactly what happened at California State University Los Angeles. Black students now have their own segregated housing. Plessy has just met Ferguson in one of the most liberal states in the country (via The College Fix):

California State University Los Angeles recently rolled out segregated housing for black students.

The arrangement comes roughly nine months after the university’s Black Student Union issued a set of demands in response to what its members contend are frequent “racist attacks” on campus, such as “racially insensitive remarks” and “microaggressions” by professors and students. One demand was for a “CSLA housing space delegated for Black students.”

“[It] would provide a cheaper alternative housing solution for Black students. This space would also serve as a safe space for Black CSLA students to congregate, connect, and learn from each other,” the demand letter stated.

The newly debuted Halisi Scholars Black Living-Learning Community “focuses on academic excellence and learning experiences that are inclusive and non-discriminatory,” Cal State LA spokesman Robert Lopez told The College Fix via email.

Cal State LA joins UConn, UC Davis and Berkeley in offering segregated housing dedicated to black students. While these housing options are technically open to all students, they’re billed and used as arrangements in which black students can live with one another.

At Claremont University, also in California, there was a cadre of lefty students who did not want white roommates, calling it an act of self-preservation to create safe spaces for people of color only. Oh, and this is somehow not reverse discrimination at all.

This is just pure lunacy. This isn’t Sarajevo during the Bosnian War. It’s college in America. There are still some things to look out for, but it’s not like these students are entering higher education institutions during the Jim Crow era. Moreover, it’s dubious that these racist attacks were indeed…racist. At UMass, making Harambe jokes could be viewed as a Title IX violation (insane) and, yes—racist.

So, sorry lefty students, we just can’t trust you with these allegations of racism since a) you’ve actually engaged in actual racist activities, like segregated housing and safe spaces for only nonwhites, which you have conveniently labeled as not racist because you’re liberal and stuff; b) saying that these safe spaces are for self preservation for nonwhites is exactly why whites in South Africa instituted apartheid—can you see why this is an absolute joke; and c) your criteria for what is racist is so much of a joke that one must wonder if you were on drugs when drafting these incoherent bullet points.

College is supposed to be a time to get uncomfortable with our beliefs. That’s not a microaggression. It’s part of growing up. This isn’t a country club, though with safe spaces, speech codes, censoring conservative views, and now segregated housing—it’s creating that mentality. That we must all bow before your inane regulations so as to not offend you in life—ever. That’s not how this works. You’re going to be in a very brutal and violent awakening when you graduate and find that that most of us in the real world laugh at your nonsensical notions about privilege and race; that there are conservatives among those who walk the streets of America. The Right gets criticized for being anti-intellectual. Well, institutionalizing separate but equal on the basis of sociopolitical and racial lines is one way to breed that ethos, albeit in a more vicious form. You mist think, act, and carry yourself according to our parameters. If not, you’re ostracized—along with being a misogynist, racist, homophobe, or any progressive smear they see fit to destroy you. That’s the mindset of the modern liberal. Obey or be destroyed, all with the comfort that you can go back to the same dormitory where everyone is of the same race as you.

It’s as if these students know nothing of history. If they knew what Plessy vs. Ferguson was, the irony of all of this will be made clear. Yet, it’s safe to assume that their counterpoint would be with these words, “But that’s different.” No kids, it’s not. Segregation is okay, but only within the confines of being liberal and under the paradoxical mindset that this will somehow bring clarity, peace, and understanding to the community. Again, isn’t that what the South African National Party tried to say about apartheid? Does anyone recall when Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd said that such a rigid system of segregation was actually a "policy of good neighborliness?”

It’s not the same. Violation of these policies isn’t going to bring Vlaakplaas knocking at your door, but it’s the ethos that segregation is fine if the people promoting it are nonwhite and doing it under the guise that this will somehow enhance the education of any given institution. That’s pure unadulterated crap.
