Showdown: Pence and Pompeo to Meet With Mexican Officials About Their Terrible Job of Stopping Illegal Immigration

Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet with an official delegation from Mexico in Washington D.C. Wednesday. The meeting comes after President Trump threatened the country with tariffs if the government refuses to do more about illegal immigration from Mexico.

So far Mexican officials have responded to the situation by claiming tariffs won't do anything to stop illegal immigration and could actually do the opposite. They're looking for a way out.

President Trump isn't buying it.

“As you know Mexico called, they want to meet. They’re going to meet on Wednesday. Secretary Pompeo is going to be at the meeting along with a few others that are very good at this. And we are going to see if we can do something," Trump said during a press conference in London Tuesday. "I think it’s more likely that the tariffs go on. And we’ll probably be talking during the time that the tariffs are on, and they’re going to be paid.”

“Mexico should step up and stop this onslaught, this invasion into our country," he continued. “Mexico shouldn’t allow millions of people to try and enter our country, and they could stop it very quickly. And I think they will. And if they won’t, we’re going to put tariffs on. And every month those tariffs go from 5% to 10% to 15% to 20 and then to 25%. And what will happen then is all of those companies that have left our country and gone to Mexico are going to be coming back to us, and that’s okay."

Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security is expected to released border apprehension numbers from May by the end of the week. So far this year, more than 500,000 people have been detained.
