During an interview with CNN, Iowa Congressman Steve King did not mince words when describing his disappointment.
"If we don't build a wall all the through, then the rest of it is subject to prosecutorial discretion. His, as it was under Barack Obama or under the next president," King said. "Something is going to have to reverse here with this President's policy or it will just blow up his base. This was a straight up promise all the way through his campaign."
"I don't think it is unclear to anybody what those campaign promises were but it looks to me like he's preparing to keep Hillary Clinton's campaign promise rather than his own," he continued.
King also pushed back on the idea of updating existing fence and redefining what a wall on the southern border should actually look like.
"It was a wall. It was a wall all the way. People are trying to redefine that term, a wall, and say it's a virtual wall and vibration sensors, it's drones, it's balloons or it's fence. A wall is a wall and the American people know that," King said, adding that it seems Trump's inner circle isn't making it a priority.
He also took to Twitter to provide some historical context.
Reagan led with Amnesty, 1986. Bush43 led with Amnesty '06, Obama led with Amnesty '13. All failed so...Trump leads with DACA Amnesty 2017.— Steve King (@SteveKingIA) September 14, 2017
The White House is arguing the President's support for a congressional deal on DACA is not amnesty. President Trump insisted Thursday morning he is working on strong border security.
