(Reuters) - A practicing Sikh and rising star politician from the Toronto area was elected on Sunday to lead Canada's left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP), after securing more than 50 percent of the vote on the first ballot, the party said.

Jagmeet Singh, a 38-year-old lawyer and Ontario provincial lawmaker, is the first person from an ethnic minority to lead a major political party in Canada.

He secured 53.6 percent of the vote to become the new head of the party.
