BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union is taking legal action against Poland for allowing continued and increased logging in the pristine Bialowieza forest, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The European Commission said Thursday that such is the urgency that it is seeking an interim measure from the EU Court of Justice to suspend the cutting down of trees "immediately."

Agata Szafraniuk of the ClientEarth environmental group said that "decisive and immediate action is the only way to avoid irreversible damage to this ancient forest."

Poland's government has said that increased logging is only carried out in younger sections traditionally used for timber production and that it fights bark beetle infestations in line with EU laws.
