Romanian Nazi victims now eligible for German compensation

BERLIN (AP) — An organization that handles claims against Germany on behalf of Jews who suffered under the Nazis says about 1,000 living survivors of persecution in Romania are now eligible for compensation.

The New York-based Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany said Wednesday that Jews who survived the 1941 pogrom in the city of Iasi and the subsequent "death trains" in which many died of suffocation and dehydration can start receiving monthly payments.

Under an agreement with Berlin, survivors will receive payments of 336 euros ($384) per month. Some 15,000 Iasi Jews are thought to have died.

Claims Conference negotiator Stuart Eizenstat said: "For those still with us, we have obtained a small measure of justice."

The Claims Conference carries out continuous negotiations to make more people eligible for compensation.
