MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippine military says a fighter jet missed its target during an airstrike against Islamic State group-aligned militants and caused debris from a building to hit and kill two soldiers in southern Marawi city.
Military spokesman Col. Edgard Arevalo said 11 other soldiers were slightly wounded when they were hit by shrapnel Wednesday when the aircraft dropped its bomb about 250 meters (820 feet) from its target.
It was the second deadly accident involving aerial bombing since the military launched an offensive to end an unprecedented siege of the lakeside city by hundreds of militants. A bomb dropped by a military jet hit an army position and killed 11 soldiers on May 31 in Marawi.
Arevalo said the latest accident is being investigated.
