British government: Don't return to soccer's 'dark days'

LONDON (AP) — The British government has condemned the latest disorder at the Olympic Stadium and says it hopes it doesn't spark a return to the "dark days" when fan violence blighted soccer in England.

Seats, coins and bottles were hurled as rival fans clashed in London on Wednesday in the closing minutes of West Ham's match against Chelsea.

Stewards and police battled to separate fans in scenes sports minister Tracey Crouch called "desperately sad." Seven people were arrested.

Crouch says "football and the authorities have worked extremely hard to tackle this type of behavior over the last 30 years ... no one wants to see a return to the dark days of the late '70s and '80s."

Disorder has dogged West Ham's matches since the team's move from Upton Park.
