DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The president of the United Arab Emirates, who has rarely been seen in public since suffering a stroke more than two years ago, has returned to the country after a private visit abroad.
The official state news agency reported Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan's return Wednesday, but did not say where he was or the purpose of his visit. He was first reported to have traveled abroad in early June.
Born in 1948, Sheikh Khalifa came to power after the 2004 death of his father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
His half brother, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, wrote on Twitter that he received him at the airport. The crown prince is expected to be the next president of the seven-state Emirates federation.
