CAIRO (AP) — Under scrutiny in Europe for its handling of the torture death of an Italian student in Cairo, Egyptian authorities are seeking to focus attention on the fate of an Egyptian who died in a London fire.
The case of 21-year-old Sherif Adel Makar Habib appeared on the front pages of many Egyptian newspapers Thursday, after officials including President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi's office, the foreign ministry, and the ministry for expatriates called for an investigation into the death.
El-Sissi's office called on British authorities to "intensify investigation into this mysterious incident in order to establish its causes, identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice."
The British embassy says authorities are working quickly to determine the circumstances of the death. British police say they have arrested a man on suspicion of arson.
