BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos is asking police to investigate the illegal hunting death of an endangered bear.
The spectacled bear named for the yellow rings around its eyes is South America's only bear species. It's found mostly along the Andes mountains.
A 3-year-old adult was found shot to death Saturday at Chingaza National Park in the cloud forest near Bogota. It was among 40 members of the shy, shaggy bear species believed to live in the park. Its total population numbers a few thousand.
While it's unclear who killed the bear, farmers have encroached on the park in recent years.
Santos took to Twitter on Tuesday to ask the head of Colombia's police to investigate. A $3,000 reward was offered for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.
