LE BOURGET, France (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says the next high-level diplomatic meeting on Syria, which is planned for New York later this month, depends on the "flow of events" over the coming week.
Speaking after meeting with U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of a global climate conference, Kerry said Tuesday he hoped to have the meeting as scheduled on Dec. 18. But he said it would depend on the results of a Saudi-led gathering of Syrian opposition figures who are trying to work out a unified position and delegation for U.N.-sponsored peace talks.
Those talks are to be accompanied by a ceasefire between the government and moderates. Both Kerry and Ban said it was important for the truce to take effect as soon as possible.
