KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — New Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansoor has denied being wounded in a dispute with another commander, calling it a "baseless claim" that is part of the "agenda of the enemy."
In a two-minute audio recording sent to media by the Taliban late Saturday, Mansoor insists the reported gunfight in neighboring Pakistan never happened. Referring to the area where the dispute was said to have taken place, he says, "I haven't seen that area in years."
The voice in the recording sounded similar to previous recordings of the secretive leader.
Mansoor also referred to a battle between Afghan forces and the Taliban in Wardak province on Friday, which killed a number of civilians. He expressed condolences to those killed and wished a swift recovery for civilians who were wounded.
