BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Amid growing public anger, Romania's interior minister has met with lawmakers from his party to explain what happened after a police officer died escorting his motorcade.
President Klaus Iohannis has advised Interior Minister Gabriel Oprea to resign over the situation, but Oprea refused.
Policeman Bogdan Gigina died after his motorcycle hit a hole Oct. 20 while he was clearing a route in Bucharest for Oprea.
Oprea, chairman of the National Union for the Progress of Romania, met party lawmakers Tuesday to explain the situation. He declined to answer reporters' questions about why he needed an escort, insisted the journey was for work purposes. He declined further comment, saying an investigation was underway.
Oprea's driver and his adjutant gave statements to prosecutors on Tuesday.
