BAYFIELD, Nova Scotia (AP) — A group of beached whales in eastern Canada has been helped back out to sea, marking the second time this week that concerned residents came together to save a stranded pod.

Marine officials, firefighters and local residents joined forces on Thursday to rescue 14 pilot whales that were beached off Bayfield, a town in Canada's maritime province of Nova Scotia on the east coast.

Tonya Wimmer, president of the Marine Animal Response Society, said the whales were still in shallow water, but she hopes they will continue making their way out.

Earlier this week a group of 16 to 19 whales was stranded in a cove in Cape Breton in the province's north. Local residents rushed to help them out to sea, but eight whales still died.
