Poll: New Spain king halts plunge in monarchy popularity

MADRID (AP) — An opinion poll shows popularity ratings for Spain's King Felipe VI are high one year into the monarch's reign, stemming a plunge registered under his scandal-hit father.

The poll published Monday by El Mundo newspaper indicates 75.1 percent of Spaniards think Felipe is a good king for Spain, while 19 percent think the opposite and 5.9 percent did not know or did not answer.

Another question showed 61. 5 percent backed the monarchy, compared with 49.9 percent in a similar poll in January 2014, before King Juan Carlos abdicated in Felipe's favor.

The poll, carried out by the Sigma Dos firm, quizzed 1,100 people in fixed and mobile telephone line interviews between June 9-11. It has an margin of error of 3 percentage points.
