KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Afghan provincial official says that at least five members of a family have been killed after an insurgent mortar struck their house in the country's east.
Sarhadi Zwak, a spokesman for the provincial governor in Laghman province, said Saturday that the attack happened late Friday night and four of the dead are women.
Zwak said the attack took place in the province's Aliangar district and wounded 11 other members of the family, most of them children.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. It comes as Taliban insurgents have stepped up their attacks across the country on Afghan soldiers and police officers at the start of their annual spring offensive, which began Friday.
