KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Sudanese newspapers are quoting a governor as saying that rebels have killed 136 civilians in attacks during the presidential election that ended last week.

Independent daily newspaper Al-Jarida and other papers quoted the governor of South Kordofan state, Adam al-Faki, as saying that rebels targeted civilian areas in order to disrupt the vote, adding that 150 people were wounded.

Al-Faki did not respond to requests for comment. Rebels are battling government forces in South Kordofan and two other regions in fighting that has displaced tens of thousands of people in recent years.

Polling centers for the election closed on Thursday and results are expected on April 27. President Omar al-Bashir is expected to extend his 25-year rule following an opposition boycott of the vote.
