UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United Nations headquarters has unveiled a new memorial to the millions of victims of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the ceremony Wednesday that some 15 million people were forced to make the crossing in slave ships during more than four centuries of the trade. He says the memorial is also for the "huge numbers" who didn't survive the journey.

Ban calls the trans-Atlantic slave trade "a stain on human history."

The permanent memorial is called "The Ark of Return" and is the result of efforts by African and Caribbean U.N. member states, among others.
