HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Local officials in Zimbabwe's second largest city, Bulawayo, say they shot around 160 stray dogs in the last month in an effort to curb rabies.

Assistant Health Services Director Edwin Sibanda told the Chronicle newspaper that officials hoped to shoot more strays. Sibanda said they only stopped shooting stray dogs because they had run out of bullets.

Sibanda said Bulawayo has seen a spike in rabies.

Veterinarians for Animal Welfare in Zimbabwe said the number of stray dogs has increased because of illegal breeding. Some Zimbabweans have turned to illegal breeding as a source of income.

Rabies is a deadly disease usually transmitted to humans through animal bites.
