BEIJING (AP) — A Malaysian robbery suspect was captured 22 minutes after he grabbed watches from a downtown Beijing luxury store while carrying a black toy gun, police said Tuesday.
Moi Kit Leng, 38, was detained on suspicion of robbery Monday evening after the robbery at a shopping center in the bustling Wangfujing district, the police said. The Beijing News identified the retailer as a Cartier store.
Wangfujing is one of the country's top shopping districts and is close to China's political center of Tiananmen Square, so it is usually heavily guarded with security personnel.
The man told police he wanted to rob the store because he lacked money, a police statement said.
Beijing News said the man tried to escape by carjacking a taxi. It quoted the Cartier store manager as saying the mask-wearing man snatched 11 watches worth more than 3 million yuan ($500,000).
