ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar (AP) — A French boy was abducted from outside his school in southwest Madagascar, authorities said Wednesday.
"There were four guys who grabbed him as he was leaving school," Hajatiana Ralaikoto, a police official in the town of Toliara, said in a telephone interview.
The motive for the kidnapping was not clear and the attackers may have meant to take a different child, Ralaikoto said. The boy comes from a family with South Asian roots and he may have another nationality in addition to his French citizenship, according to the police official.
The French ambassador, Francois Goldblatt, referred to the kidnapping on Twitter, saying "a new and even more unacceptable boundary" had been crossed.
There have been a number of high-profile cases of kidnapping, apparently for ransom, in Madagascar over the last few months. The government of the Indian Ocean nation is under pressure to deal with a perception of rising insecurity.
