BERLIN (AP) — German prosecutors have indicted an 18-year-old on charges of serious bodily harm causing the death of a young woman who came to the defense of two teenage girls he and others were harassing.
Turkish-German teaching student Tugce Albayrak died days after being struck on the head and falling to the ground following a Nov. 15 altercation at a fast food restaurant in the city of Offenbach. The 23-year-old was hailed as a hero and praised by German President Joachim Gauck as a role model for trying to help others.
Offenbach prosecutor Axel Kreutz said Tuesday that the suspect, identified only as Sanel M., would be tried before a juvenile court.
Kreutz declined to comment on German media reports that Albayrak's skull was fractured by the fall.
