NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Surgery in the United States to repair Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades' heart valves was successful and his condition is stable, an official said Wednesday.
Cyprus government spokesman Nicos Christodoulides said 68-year-old Anastasiades will remain in intensive care at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York for several days.
Tuesday's operation to repair the heart valves and Anastasiades' occasional heart arrhythmia was completed "without any complications," according to Christodoulides.
Anastasiades' cardiologist and his physician were present during the surgery.
The president has been the leader of Cyprus since March 2013.
