PRISTINA, Kosovo (AP) — A senior international official in Kosovo says the United Nations has partially lifted an Italian judge's immunity to allow a probe into alleged corruption inside the European Union's police and justice mission in Kosovo.
Judge Francesco Florit is suspected of accepting a bribe to secure the release of Kosovo criminals while he served with the EULEX mission in Kosovo. EULEX derives its mandate from the UN and "immunities have to be lifted before a judicial investigation," the official told The Associated Press.
He spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to discuss the case.
An independent review ordered by the EU will seek to establish if the mission conspired to cover up the allegations raised by a EULEX prosecutor.
Florit has denied the claims.
