LONDON (AP) — Britain's chief prosecutor is investigating the case of a woman who killed herself several days before she was to face trial on charges of falsely reporting she had been raped.
Director of Public Prosecutions Alison Saunders said Friday she was "very saddened" by Eleanor de Freitas' death and will investigate all aspects of the case.
The 23-year-old, suffered from bipolar disorder, according to her family.
She had reported to London police last year that she had been raped, but police decided after arresting a suspect that they would not charge him with a crime
The man she had accused of rape then sought a prosecution of her for perverting the course of justice and prosecutors eventually brought charges against de Freitas on that charge.
