Bahrain: Firebombers damage shops near police post

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) — Bahraini police have confronted attackers who tried to firebomb a police post in a largely Shiite community in the tiny Gulf island nation, authorities said Tuesday.

The interior ministry said the incident happened in the eastern village of Sitra the previous evening.

It says several shops and a market near the police station were damaged by people hurling petrol bombs.

"The terrorist attackers were dealt with in accordance to the law and situation was brought back to normal," it said in a statement.

Bahrain is a Sunni-ruled kingdom that hosts the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet. It has faced more than three years of low-level unrest following an uprising led by its Shiite majority calling for greater political rights and opportunities in 2011.

Radical anti-government activists frequently clash with police, and some have used bombs against security forces.
