LISBON, Portugal (AP) — A U.S. warship is in Lisbon ahead of its participation in a Mediterranean Sea drill focusing on how a NATO ally might be liberated after being occupied by a fictitious invader.
The USS Mount Whitney amphibious command ship arrived in the Portuguese capital on Monday and will head next week toward the Spanish Balearic island of Menorca for the NATO training exercise.
Col. Martin Downie, a NATO military spokesman, says the exercise has been planned for about two years.
The ship normally has 250 crew members but an additional 300 people are scheduled to participate in the training mission. The Mount Whitney is based in Gaeta, Italy.
