MILAN (AP) — Italy's government has set up an eBay page to auction off non-essential government sedans, which have become a symbol of the state's wasteful spending.

Premier Matteo Renzi has pledged to sell 151 vehicles by April 16. The eBay page Thursday promised the first 25 vehicles would go online "in the coming hours."

Among the offerings, according to business daily Il Sole 24 Ore: a 2007 Alfa Romeo, with a starting price of 5,000 euros ($6,879).

Renzi modeled the auction on one he organized as Florence mayor. His predecessors in Rome have reduced the number of official cars almost by half, to 6,200, in the last four years.

The plan has its critics. One lawmaker has urged the government to reallocate the cars to replace older vehicles used by law enforcement.
