BAGHDAD (AP) — Officials say car bombings in northern and central Iraq have killed two civilians.

Police chief Col. Hussein Ali Rasheed says a suicide bomber blew up his explosives-laden vehicle in the ethnically mixed town of Tuz Khormato on Wednesday, killing one bystander and wounding 27. The town is located about 200 kilometers (130 miles) north of Baghdad.

Another police officer said a parked car bomb exploded in a commercial area in central Baghdad, killing one civilian and wounding five. The figure was confirmed by a medical official. Both spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to release information.

The blasts came a day after a series of attacks killed 31 people. More than 4,000 people have been killed since April, including 804 just in August, according to U.N. figures.
