COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Protesters in Sri Lanka have accused India of interfering in Sri Lanka's internal affairs by criticizing Colombo's plans to withdraw powers from provincial councils set up to share power with ethnic Tamils.

About 100 protesters from the Federation of National Organizations, which is made up of nationalistic groups, staged a silent protest Monday in front of the Indian embassy and urged India not to interfere in Sri Lanka's internal affairs.

The protest came after the Indian government objected to a Sri Lankan government's plan to withdraw key powers from the provincial councils set up after the end of a quarter century civil war.

The dispute goes back to an agreement the countries signed in 1987 to set up the councils to devolve power in an effort to end Tamil militancy.
