Romania body to name alleged communist repressors

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A government institute investigating political crimes committed during the communist period in Romania has compiled a list of 35 officials alleged to have run gulags where thousands of people were tortured and killed.

The list is to be publicized and handed to prosecutors in May.

The investigation is the biggest operation of its kind since Romania shed communism in 1989, and it could shed light on the atrocities committed against that era's dissidents.

Andrei Muraru, head of the Institute for Investigating the Crimes of Communism, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that it was important that former oppressors be held accountable.

The list was compiled with the help of former detainees and government data. Less than 3,000 former political prisoners are now alive in Romania.
