Report: Fighting erupts in northeast Syria

ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkey's state-run agency reports heavy clashes between Syrian regime forces and rebels trying to take control of a region in the far northeast corner of Syria.

The Anadolu news agency says the clashes broke out Thursday at al-Hasakah province's Rasulayn region, a few hundred meters (yards) away from the Turkish border town of Ceylanpinar.

It says several Syrians fled to Ceylanpinar seeking refuge from the fighting and at least eight Syrians wounded in the fighting were being treated in Turkish hospitals.

Schools in Ceylanpinar were closed for the day as the military increased security measures along the border. Residents were being warned to stay away from the frontier.

The civil war in Syria has killed more than 36,000 people since an uprising against Syrian regime began in March 2011.
