Sudan: Rebels shell southern border town, kill 2

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Sudan's military spokesman says rebel forces have shelled a town near the border with South Sudan, killing two children and wounded eight people.

It was the latest incident in a circle of violence that still plagues the region since South Sudan gained independence last year.

The state SUNA news agency quotes Col. Sawarmy Khalid as saying the rebels on Tuesday targeted residential areas in South Kordofan state, about 12 kilometers (7 miles) outside the border town of Kadugli, inflicting the casualties.

Alfred Lodi, the spokesman for the rebel fighters — known as Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North — says they were responding to aerial bombardment by Sudanese forces.

He says the two sides have been shelling each other since early in the morning. He didn't have information about casualties.
