BEIJING (AP) — Chinese state media say a man who killed three children and injured 13 others at a daycare center told police he was contemplating suicide before the attack.
The official Xinhua News Agency says Wu Yechang had grown frustrated with life because of unemployment.
Xinhua reported Saturday that Wu said he bought an axe and was wandering in Pingnan county in Guangxi province on Friday when he saw the daycare center. He told police he abandoned the suicide plan to do something bigger.
Police are determining whether he suffered from any mental disorder.
The county has beefed up security near schools since the attack.
China has experienced a string of attacks at schools and elsewhere that have prompted calls for more attention to mental illnesses and concern over rising stress in Chinese society.
