Senators says US must boost Caribbean security

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Two U.S. senators have released a new report detailing recommendations to prevent a future "security crisis" in the Caribbean.

California Democrat Dianne Feinstein and Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley say Washington must be prepared to counter any uptick in drug trafficking routes in the region, with its numerous islets and barely monitored coasts.

In a report released Thursday, the American senators say the U.S. must update and strengthen anti-money laundering laws and continue extraditions of Caribbean drug barons. They also call for more U.S. assistance to Caribbean nations to draft asset forfeiture laws and say strong support is needed to counter drug-smuggling networks in Haiti.

The report argues that the U.S. should send a detailed history of all criminal deportees sent back to their native lands in the Caribbean.
