BANJUL (Reuters) - Gambia's government confirmed on Monday that it had executed nine prisoners being held on death row despite international calls criticising the president's plans to carry out all death penalties by mid-September.

An Interior Ministry statement said that the nine prisoners had been executed by firing squad on Sunday after their appeals' processes had been exhausted.
