MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) — The Liberian government says it has arrested six of the insurgents who attacked two Ivorian military checkpoints in the border region.
Defense Minister Brownie Samukai said Tuesday the men did not deny involvement in the attack, and were caught trying to cross into Liberia illegally with their weapons.
But the Liberian defense minister denied claims that the militants had originally slipped across the border from Liberia to launch their attacks, calling it "an internal Ivorian problem."
At least one person was wounded when the checkpoints came under attack on Monday, the latest in a series of assaults on Ivorian military installations.
Ivorian officials have blamed the recent violence on rogue soldiers and loyalists of former President Laurent Gbagbo.
