Kenyan authorities to arrest lion killers

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Kenyan authorities say they will arrest and charge Maasai warriors who speared to death six ed lions in the outskirts of Nairobi because they allegedly did it to satisfy a cultural tradition that ranks facing off with a lion, armed with a spear, as one of the highest honors a man can achieve.

Paul Mbugua, an official of the Kenya Wildlife Service, said Friday that after the warriors killed the lions they cut off the tails to keep as trophies of their achievement.

The Maasai say they grew tired of waiting for veterinarians to come after watching the lions devour their goats, a precious commodity in their community, on Wednesday. Mbugua says the warriors did not heed calls by rangers to wait for vets to tranquilize the lions.
