Palestinian killed in clash with Lebanese soldiers

Lebanon's state-run news agency says soldiers killed a Palestinian and wounded another during a confrontation outside a refugee camp in the country's north.

NNA said Friday's incident occurred after a crowd of Palestinians surrounded and hurled rocks at soldiers. The soldiers had earlier detained a young man trying to bring a motorcycle into the camp that lies near the northern port city of Tripoli. The Lebanese army is meant to guard the perimeters of the country's refugee camps, which mostly form impoverished ghettos.

There are still tensions between Palestinian residents of Nahr el-Bared and Lebanese soldiers left over from three months of clashes in 2007 between the army and an al-Qaida-inspired Islamic extremist group. The battles killed 168 soldiers, alongside dozens of militants and Palestinian civilians.
