Daughter of Bahrain hunger striker sentenced

Bahraini opposition groups say the daughter of a jailed hunger striker has been sentenced to one month in prison for a confrontation with the police during a protest rally.

Zainab al-Khawaja was accused of abusing a policewoman during a demonstration last month. The rally was part of ongoing Shiite-led protests against the Gulf nation's Sunni monarchy.

She is the daughter of a prominent human rights activist, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, who has been on hunger strike since Feb. 8 and appeared earlier this week in court using a wheelchair. He and seven other activists were sentenced to life in prison last year. They are now among a 21-member group whose cases are being re-examined.

The younger al-Khawaja is scheduled for another hearing Sunday on other protest-related charges.
