Iran: Israeli nukes greatest threat to peace

A senior Iranian official says Israel's undeclared nuclear weapons pose the greatest threat to Mideast peace.

He also is suggesting that the United States and other Western nuclear-weapons states are hypocritically ignoring their disarmament commitments.

Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad Mahdi Akhondzadeh was speaking Wednesday to a 189-nation nonproliferation meeting.

His comments reflect Iranian attempts to deflect international concern over the goal of Tehran's nuclear program, which Iranian leaders insist is peaceful.

Israel is widely believed to have nuclear weapons, but has never admitted it, pursuing an official policy of "ambiguity" to deter potential attackers. Israel has threatened a pre-emptive strike against Iran over its nuclear program.
