Zimbabwe's widower prime minister gets engaged

Zimbabwe's prime minister's party says its leader has become engaged to be married three years after his wife of three decades died in a car wreck.

The party said Saturday that the 58-year-old Morgan Tsvangirai, a father and grandfather, held a Friday night engagement party for his fiancee.

The engagement comes after months of speculation on his private life.

Last year, a tribal chief fined him two cows, two sheep and cotton cloth for allegedly proposing to another woman under African custom. That case is still in dispute. Tsvangirai denies paying a first installment of traditional "bride price."

Tsvangirai is in a shaky three-year coalition with longtime President Robert Mugabe. Mugabe's party has accused Tsvangirai of philandering at the expense of his government duties.
