Thailand on alert after bombings in south kill 14

Thai authorities are warning of more possible attacks by Islamist insurgents after the deadliest bombings in years in two southern cities over the weekend.

Deputy Prime Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapa said Tuesday that attacks similar to Saturday's coordinated explosions in the commercial districts of Hat Yai and Yala could occur in Thailand's southernmost provinces in April or May.

Fourteen people were killed and more than 300 wounded Saturday. Yuthasak said hardline militants carried out the attacks in retaliation for a major crackdown on southern insurgents.

More than 5,000 people have been killed in Thailand's three southernmost provinces since an Islamist separatist insurgency flared in 2004.
