Storm slams Japan, kills 2 and paralyzes traffic

A powerful rainstorm is battering Japan, paralyzing traffic and leaving thousands of homes without electricity.

Two people have been killed and dozens injured by the storm that lashed across Japan's main island of Honshu on Tuesday. A low pressure system was causing the storm that had winds of 108 kilometers (67 miles) per hour _ nearly typhoon strength.

The Meteorological Agency urged people to stay indoors.

Police said two people died in separate warehouse collapses in Toyama in the north and Kagawa in southern Japan. Public broadcaster NHK tallied more than 160 people injured.

The storm halted commuter trains and grounded more than 500 domestic flights in and around Tokyo. Many companies and stores closed early. More than 10,000 households lost electricity.
