Philippines: Bandit ambush kills militant leader

Philippine officials say a militant leader has been killed in an ambush by bandits in the country's south.

Army Col. Ricardo Visaya says Long Malat Sulayman of the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf group died hours after being wounded in Sunday's attack by bandits feuding over land. A firefight broke out, but no one else was wounded.

The attack happened in Basilan's province's Al-Barka town, where Sulayman led a sub-group of militants. He had been wanted by authorities. An October operation to arrest him and his followers ended in the deaths of 19 soldiers.

Elsewhere, gunmen armed with grenade launchers attacked a wedding party in Basilan's Sumisip township. Thirteen people were wounded. Visaya says the attackers' identities and motives aren't immediately known.
