Philippines gives 3 Chinese life on drug charges

A Philippine court has handed life sentences to three Chinese nationals for possession of some 7 kilograms (15 pounds) of methamphetamine.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency said in a statement Friday that Sunxiao Xu, Wenxian Hong and Xuiqin Shi, all from southeast China's Fujian province, were convicted and sentenced earlier this month. The three were arrested two years ago in Paranaque city in metropolitan Manila.

Judge Danilo Suarez meted out two life sentences, or 80 years in jail, to Xu and Hong on March 9 for illegal drug possession and selling almost 500 grams (18 ounces) of meth. Shi was acquitted of selling the drug but was ordered jailed for 40 years for possession.

Xu and Hong were fined 6 million pesos ($140,000) each, while Shi was fined 3 million pesos ($70,000).
