Officials in Somalia's capital say a mortar shell slammed into a house overnight, killing four people from one family.
Mogadishu ambulance service chief Ali Muse said Monday that several mortars hit houses as families slept. Muse said a father, mother and two children were killed in one house. An additional 12 people were wounded.
African Union forces have largely pushed fighters from the militant group al-Shabab out of the capital, but sporadic fighting continues.
Al-Shabab appeared to claim responsibility for the mortar attacks on its Twitter feed Monday, saying that the mortars had hit the presidential palace.
