Police in Thailand say suspected insurgents trying to ambush an army bus missed their target and instead killed one high school student and wounded two others.
Police Col. Tuandar Juthanant says the attackers detonated an explosive device on a rural road in southern Pattani province's Yarang district.
He says the three female religious high school students were riding a motorcycle when the blast occurred on Saturday.
The army bus passed by just afterward. No soldiers were reported hurt.
More than 5,000 people have been killed in Thailand's three Muslim-dominated southern provinces since 2004, and such violence has become commonplace in the region.
